Easingwold Haxby Robinson Bowling Club a brief history

A bowling green at Easingwold first appeared in 1884 in the grounds of the Vicarage next to the Parish Church.  This was done at the behest of the Reverend Nathan Jackson who had arrived in Easingwold in 1877.  At this location the Easingwold Bowling Club was established in 1907, the Club soon taking in part in matches against teams from surrounding villages.

The Club moved to its present location in Paradise Fields in 1927, the land being leased to the Club by Mr Haxby Robinson a local solicitor and Club member - hence the Club’s full title of Easingwold Haxby Robinson Bowling Club.

When Mr Haxby Robinson died, the land fell under the ownership of William Pearson Brown, a local butcher who also became Chairman of the Club. When Mr Brown died the Green and the land around it was given to the Club members. It was then that the W. Pearson Brown trophy was first competed for and still is as the Club’s Pairs competition.

A Ladies section of the Club was formed in 1961, the Ladies Cup (still played for today) being first contested for in 1972.
